The DDD approach failed because of reflections. The various splitters and couplers all produce optical reflections due to mismatches between components. This should not have been surprising, because copper pairs also give rise to reflections in the same way. Unfortunately, the reflections of the transmitted signal interfere with the signal received from the far end of the PON, which is attenuated by the passive splitting.
