But horn players of whatever nationality are united by a connective tissue, plugged into a matrix that only they fully understand. That understanding begins as soon as, like Andrei Gloukhov or Phil Myers or Stefan Dohr, like Lowell Greer or Dave Lee, they find themselves hooked. It may be an accident, but once they chance upon the horn, it seems there is no question of a choice, no possibility of turning back.

A Celtic horn known as a karnyx proliferated across Europe. In 1816 fragments of a karnyx were dug up in the Moray Firth. In 2004 five more were found, all but one decorated with boar’s heads, in central France. The instrument is documented in a Celtic attack on Delphi in 279 bc. Three karnyx players are represented on the Gundestrup Cauldron from the first century bc performing in some sort of ritualistic ceremony.
